Convention Reflection

By Bill Taylor

The 2020 NPRHA Missoula, Montana convention was scheduled for September 15-19, 2020 at the Holiday Inn Parkside in downtown Missoula.

Unfortunately, by August 2020 large gatherings of people were being discouraged by public health departments due to the Covid 19 pandemic. As a consequence, the NPRHA Board voted to postpone the 2020 convention until September 21-25, 2021.

Convention Location

The Holiday Inn was available on those dates, and most of the arrangements made for the 2020 gathering held the following year. The convention committee consisted of Missoula residents Bill and Jan Taylor as co-chairs, Chris Frissell as modeling chair, Dave and Jeannie Franz as registration chairs, Al Burns as tour organizer, Kirk Thompson and Larry Brumback as layout visit organizers, and Tom McCarthy as swap meet chair. The Taylors put together the slate of presenters. This committee worked very well together and all arrangements went off without a hitch (see attached schedule). The Holiday Inn’s restaurant was still closed, but their banquet facilities prepared group meals for most occasions. Washington Corporation (Montana Rail Link) graciously allowed the attendees to tour the former NP depot, the Missoula car shop complex, the yard, and the headquarters building. The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula similarly organized tours of its facility. Beach Transportation provided the busses. (see itinerary on schedule). The Missoula Model Railroad Club participated in the convention swap meet since its train show was on Sunday.

The weather was ideal the whole week, and the high light was the outdoor barbeque on the banks of the Clark Fork River on a beautiful September Wednesday afternoon.

146 people registered for the convention and several other locals attended on day passes. This was enough to fund the convention, tours, and other expenses for the entire convention with a small profit left over.
