The GNRHS, NPRHA, and SP&SHS welcome you to the first-ever joint Hill Lines convention! Of course, you don’t have to be a member of a Hill Lines historical society to attend–all railfans are welcome.

Planning is being finalized and updates will be made to this page regularly. In the meantime, registration is open (click the green button above) and well as hotel registration (info below). In addition to Steve Fuller from the NPRHA, Mary McGlothlin represents the GNRHS and Bob Willer represents the SP&SHS.

Convention Location

Lodging and Sights

The host hotel is the Doubletree Hotel St. Paul Downtown (411 Minnesota St., St. Paul, MN, 55101). Rooms are $125/night (convention rate; King bed or two Double beds). Please call the hotel direct to book at 651-291-8800 and use group code 907.

There are several Hill-related historic sites, many with historic markers, in the metro area for self-guided tours. Maps will be provided. The Minnesota History Center has a wealth of information on railroad history and is open to then public Wednesday through Sunday. Visit mnhs.org for details. Self-guided railroad layout tours on the day after the convention (Sunday, September 14) are also a possibility. Stay tuned for details.

Schedule Overview

While the detailed schedule is not yet available, here are some highlights:

  • Welcome reception on Tuesday evening (9/9)
  • 3 full days of presentations on Wednesday (9/10), Thursday (9/11), and Friday (9/12) focusing on the relationships and interaction between the Hill Lines railroads
  • Annual membership meetings for each society
  • Joint swap meet (aka Railfair) on Saturday (9/13)
  • Social hour and banquet on Saturday evening, featuring a nationally-known keynote speaker

Excursions

  • “All day” train ride on Tuesday (9/9) on the Minnesota Transportation Museum’s scenic Osceola, WI to Withrow Jct., MN line; Lunch will be included
  • MTM Jackson Street Roundhouse tour (including GNRHS / NPRHA archives) on Wednesday (9/10). See James J. Hill’s business car and other Hill Lines historic equipment
  • James J. Hill mansion tour on Saturday (9/13)
